Is it Shark Week yet? I guess if you live off the coast of Florida or Australia then it's probably Shark Week every week. Did you know that sharks are 400 million years old? That's hella old. They were creeping around the oceans for 200 million years before the first dinosaurs roamed our fair planet. I'm a one-stop shop for superfluous shark facts. I know, I know, this post isn't actually about sharks.

Can I digress a bit further? At a recent house party a charming British gent was flipping through the host's Netflix queue and yelled out "Sharknado" rather incredulously before breaking into ROFL laughter. Do they not have SyFy movies of the week with abomination of nature portmanteaus for names in Britain?

Anyways, this outfit is a FlorPoDot. Okay, sounds way less cool than Sharknado. Bottom line: I like mixing prints. Florals and polka dots are pretty awesome together. BTW the floral bit is a onesie. Insert wild proclamations of romper love here. Heart emoji. Oh, and I saw a shark at the aquarium! I didn't ask him if he was 400 million years old. There's the tie-in.

hello, old friend

Acne dress and sweater, VPL boots, ootd

{oversized cardigan} Acne Berly (AW 09) {dress} Acne Mabel (pre AW 09) {belt} Wilfred from Aritzia {boots} VPL for LD Tuttle {bracelet} Elena Estaun

Sometimes ya just gotta show some love to AW 09. A good vintage for fun Acne pieces. This blue mohair grandpa cardigan is my go-to for a pop of color. The abstract print Mabel dress with its asymmetrical hem is always fun for layering. Both are classic enough to transcend seasons and trends, the most important factor in determining "hello old friend" status. What pieces are lurking at the back of your closet waiting to be rediscovered and taken out for a night on the town?

Up close and personal with a few of my current faves. Gold gladiator sandals are a flashy neutral, and a classic peep-toe in leopard adds pizazz to any simple look. Two perfect pairs for the summer heat.

palm desert

We drove all night into the desert, stopping only to gasp at the stars shining at their brightest. A weekend in Palm Springs awaited. My friend Milla always celebrates her birthday over a weekend at The ACE. The perfect setting for some Wes Andersonian antics. Moonrise Kingdom, anyone? The ACE is all mid-century summer camp vibes. We hit the pool with delicious cocktails, went into town for a little thrifting, and explored the hiking path behind the hotel while naming the cacti. Ten modeled a few looks perfectly crafted for the desert heat.

Over the weekend I had a conversation with one of the many Kates I know. Pastries may have been involved. Our talk somehow reminded me that sleepy seaside towns sprinkled along the eastern seaboard occupy a fairly schmaltzy place in my heart. Places like where Kate grew up. Places that are both evocative in the pop-culture mindset of "The Way Way Back" style coming-of-age summers, and on the creepier end of the spectrum "Jaws". Isn't it common knowledge that unassuming fishing villages always attract Croctopus type sea monsters? Regardless, there's something infinitely charming about schleping over to a tiny white-washed shack for a home-cooked lobster roll and a peek at some crashing waves.

Since we're on the topic of sea monsters, I've always been intrigued by Inuit creation mythology. Recently I was reading about the legend of Sedna. She is a giant, who is thrown over a kayak for attacking her parents. As she clings to the side her fingers are chopped off and each finger becomes whales, walruses, or seals. She descends into the watery depths and becomes the ruler of marine life and goddess of the sea. She was pretty much the Jay-Z of the ocean, pretty cool, huh? Whale now I'm just blubbering on...
